This position reports dually to the Field Coordinator (administrative and field-operations oversight) and the Head of Production (technical production and editorial oversight).

InformAction (IFA) is a human rights and social justice organisation that uses film and community dialogue to catalyse public debate, accountability, and action.
Our model involves mobile field teams that bring a screen, projector, camera, and facilitation to rural and marginalised communities across Kenya.
We screen documentaries and social-justice films, lead community discussions, document the conversations, and produce video content that surfaces governance and human rights issues.
Since 2010, we have built a strong presence across several counties, empowering communities to demand justice and accountability.
Position Summary
The Video Producer (Field-Based) will drive the production of documentary-style content in the field. They will film community screenings, facilitate and record community dialogue, conduct interviews, and produce short documentaries or video reports that reflect local realities around governance, justice, and social accountability. The role requires both technical skill and a strong orientation toward social justice.
Key Responsibilities
Production Planning
- Collaborate with field-based leadership to plan film projects aligned with InformAction’s strategic themes (e.g., governance, electoral justice, human rights).
- Develop production plans: research, storyboarding, scripting, location scouting, risk assessment, and budgeting.
- Liaise with the central production team in Nairobi to align field-based content with organisational priorities.
Shooting and Fieldwork
- Film community screenings, debates, and public town-hall style meetings.
- Capture interviews, B-roll, and “day-in-the-life” footage to build narratives that reflect local issues, struggles, and action.
- Work in challenging field conditions (remote areas, limited electricity or infrastructure) to get high-quality footage while maintaining safety and ethical standards.
Editing and Post-Production
- Edit raw footage into compelling short films, documentaries, or video pieces for different platforms
- Integrate community dialogue and testimony into visual narratives, ensuring that community voices remain central.
- Work with the HQ-based production team to refine content, adding graphics, subtitles.
Community Engagement & Facilitation
- Support screening events by coordinating with facilitators to lead post-film discussions.
- Help document the community conversations on video, capturing testimonies, demands, and actionable ideas.
- Assist in mobilising and training community action teams (CATs) formed after screenings, as part of the “Watch, Discuss, Act” methodology.
- Support monitoring and evaluation efforts by providing qualitative material from the field.
Safety, Ethics & Compliance
- Ensure all video work follows ethical guidelines, especially when dealing with vulnerable groups or sensitive topics.
- Maintain safety protocols during field production and community events.
Qualifications & Skills
- Bachelor’s degree or Diploma (or equivalent experience) in Film, Journalism, Media Studies, Communications, or a related field.
- Fluency in English, Swahili and Kenyan local languages (Maa/Nandi) is required.
- Minimum 2 years of experience in video production, documentary filmmaking, or community media (preferably in field/NGO contexts).
- Strong technical skills: camera operation, sound recording, lighting, and non-linear editing (e.g., Adobe Premiere, DaVinci, Final Cut).
- Experience in fieldwork: working in remote or resource-limited contexts, travelling regularly, and engaging directly with communities.
- Excellent communication skills; ability to conduct interviews sensitively, facilitate community conversations, and build trust.
- Strong storytelling ability, with a passion for social change, human rights, and governance.
- Ability to manage multiple projects and meet tight deadlines.
- Commitment to ethical media practices, respect for participants’ dignity and agency, and safety in the field.
- Driving capability is an added advantage.
