
ACCOUNTANT (1 Post)
Reports to: Chief Executive Officer
Term of Employment: Three-year renewable contract
Job Purpose
The primary purpose of the position is to prepare, examine and ensure that financial records are accurate and that all statutory deductions are timely and properly remitted. In addition, the holder will ensure timely and accurate financial reports, timely and accurate member accounts updates and certify that all the book-keeping and accounting work is done meticulously.
Duties and Responsibilities
The Accountant shall be responsible for overseeing finance and accounting function in the Society. The key duties shall include:
a) Communicate and advise the Chief executive officer regularly on financial status of the Society and funds available for SACCO activities.
b) Ensure accurate and timely financial record keeping.
c) Timely preparation and presentation of management records, cost control reports and budgets
d) Prepare and submit statutory returns as per the law; NSSF, NHIF, PAYE, NITA etc.
e) Review the performance of account officers.
f) Preparation of Society final accounts, Trial Balance, statement of financial position, Statement of comprehensive income, Cash flow statement etc;
g) Analysing market and competitors’ trends.
h) Developing financial management mechanisms;
i) Conducting reviews/evaluations for cost reductions on various vote heads;
j) Managing Sacco’s financial accounting and monitoring systems;
k) To liaise with internal /External Auditors on audit Controls and act on management letters;
l) Producing accurate financial reports;
m) Management of staff payroll;
n) Keeping abreast of changes in financial regulations and legislation;
o) Ensuring the Society assets and liabilities are recorded correctly and safeguarded;
p) Ensuring the necessary cash reserve is maintained as required by law;
q) Keeping and managing debtors and creditors records;
r) Implementation and review of the Society’s financial accounting policies and procedures;
s) Giving guidance in all financial and accounting matters;
t) Ensuring adequate budgetary controls are in place;
u) Advising and overseeing prudent financial management and investment;
v) Preparation and submission of accurate statutory reports as required e.g. SASRA reports
w) Ensuring that accounts and reconciliation are done on a weekly basis and adherence to specific deadlines;
x) Any other lawful duties that may be assigned from time to time.
Qualifications
Appointment to the position will be made from persons who:
a) Are holders of a Business-related degree or its equivalent from a recognised university and CPA (K) or ACCA
or
CPA (K) and have satisfactorily served as an Accountant or a comparable position with similar responsibilities in a SACCO or in like organizations for a minimum period of 2 years.
b) Minimum 2 years’ experience in management information system preferably Microsoft Navision System.
c) Diploma in Co-operative Management will be an added advantage.
