Job Description – Systems Engineer

Department: Information & Communication Technology (ICT)

Location: Kenya

Reports To: Systems Manager

Job Purpose / Summary

To administer, maintain, secure, and optimize Wananchi Group’s enterprise IT systems and infrastructure, ensuring high availability, reliability, performance, and security of servers, operating systems, networks, cloud services, databases, user services, and other critical technology platforms supporting business operations.

The role will provide advanced technical support, proactive system monitoring, infrastructure maintenance, backup and disaster recovery management, and implementation of technology improvements in line with Wananchi Group’s business and IT requirements.

Key Roles:

  • Administer, optimize, and maintain internal IT systems, enterprise servers, network elements, and core IT infrastructure.
  • Lead hardware/software upgrades, patching, system maintenance, and infrastructure projects with vendors and internal teams.
  • Design, implement, configure, and maintain enterprise systems and infrastructure in line with organizational requirements.
  • Administer Windows/Linux server environments, Active Directory, virtualization platforms, databases, storage, backup systems, and related IT services.
  • Conduct systems and network monitoring, performance analysis, capacity planning, and traffic optimization to ensure optimal infrastructure performance.
  • Provide 3rd-level technical support to resolve complex IT, systems, server, network, and infrastructure issues, collaborating with team members to streamline department operations.
  • Plan, implement, and monitor robust security measures to protect enterprise systems, servers, databases, and IT infrastructure from internal and external threats.
  • Perform regular system and database backups, apply software patches and updates, and manage system recovery and disaster recovery processes.
  • Manage user accounts, access rights, system permissions, and authentication services in accordance with organizational security policies.
  • Maintain accurate technical documentation covering system configurations, infrastructure architecture, backups, recovery procedures, and operational processes.

Qualifications

Education & Certifications:

  1. Bachelor’s degree in information technology or computer science,
  2. professional certifications in Microsoft infrastructure,
  3. Database management, networking, cloud computing, or systems administration, such as MCSE/MCSA, Microsoft Azure, SQL, CCNA, VMware, or equivalent certifications.

Additionally, the candidate should possess the following skills: –

  1. Core Competencies: Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities, an organized technical mindset, and keen attention to detail across complex systems and IT infrastructure.
  2. Communication & Collaboration: Exceptional capability to translate intricate technical concepts into plain terms for stakeholders, coupled with strong interpersonal communication and patience.
  3. Professional Standards: High degree of discretion and integrity when handling confidential enterprise systems and data, alongside enthusiasm and deep technical expertise.
