The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. Its mandate is to coordinate the development of environmental policy consensus by keeping the global environment under review and bringing emerging issues to the attention of governments and the international community for action. UNEP’s Ecosystems Division engages with governments and other partners to develop and promote ecosystem-based solutions for sustainable development. UNEP aims to strengthen the environmental dimensions of One Health approach, better integrate the environment to move from reactive response towards proactive prevention to tackle health crises, and effectively contribute towards coordinated action on human, animal and ecosystem health at national, regional and global levels. This assignment is intended to support UNEP’s work on One Health. This position is in the Nature and Health Unit of the Biodiversity and Land Branch, Ecosystems Division in the Nairobi duty station. Under the direct supervision of the Chief of the Nature for Health Unit, the incumbent will perform the following duties

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Participates in the development, implementation and evaluation of assigned programmes/projects and activities; monitors and analyzes programme/project development and implementation; reviews relevant documents and reports; identifies problems and issues to be addressed and proposes corrective actions; liaises with relevant parties; identifies and tracks follow-up actions.
  • Performs consulting assignments, in collaboration with the client, by planning and facilitating workshops and other interactive sessions, and assisting in developing the action plan the client will use to manage the change.
  • Researches, analyzes and presents information gathered from diverse sources.
  • Assists in policy development, including the review and analysis of issues and trends, preparation of evaluations, and other research activities and studies.
  • Undertakes survey initiatives; designs data collection tools; reviews, analyzes and interprets responses; identifies problems/issues and prepares conclusions.
  • Prepares various written outputs, e.g. draft background papers, analyses, sections of reports and studies, and inputs to publications.
  • Provides substantive support to consultative and other meetings and conferences, including proposing agenda topics, identifying participants, and preparing documents and presentations.
  • Undertakes outreach activities; conducts training workshops and seminars; makes presentations on assigned topics/activities.
  • Participates in or leads field missions, including providing guidance to external consultants, government officials and other parties, and drafting mission summaries.
  • Coordinates activities related to budget and funding, including programme/project preparation and submissions, progress reports and financial statements; prepares related documents/reports (pledging, work programme, programme budget).
  • Collects and analyzes data to identify trends or patterns and provides insights through graphs, charts, tables and reports, using data visualization methods to enable data-driven planning, decision-making, presentation and reporting.
  • Performs other duties as required.

Experience

Required:

  • Minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in project or programme management in the area of One Health, biodiversity, climate or pollution linked to health.
  • At least two (2) years of relevant work experience in developing countries.
  • At least two (2) years of experience working in international organizations such as the United Nations.

Desirable:

  • Experience in international interagency initiatives involving health and environment sectors.
  • Two (2) years or more of experience in data analytics or a related area.

Education

  • Advanced university degree (master’s degree or equivalent) in Environmental Science, Public Health, Interdisciplinary Studies, Social Sciences or a related field is required.
  • A first-level university degree in combination with qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
  • Successful completion of both degree and non-degree programmes in data analytics, business analytics or data science is desirable.

Languages

  • English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
  • For this job opening, English is required.
  • French is desirable.
