The role
We are looking for a hands-on, experienced volunteer Finance Director to develop and oversee the financial management of our Kenya-based charity, which operates under the ownership and governance of a UK charity. Our income is KES10-15mln per annum.
This volunteer role is vital in ensuring transparent, compliant and effective financial stewardship. There will be close coordination and communication with the UK Finance Director to maintain alignment and reporting consistency across both entities.
Beyond Financial oversight, you’ll serve as an ambassador —representing us in external forums, supporting strategic partnerships, and identifying opportunities for collaboration and fundraising.
Key responsibilities
- Oversee financial management and reporting ensuring accuracy, compliance and transparency.
- Support the preparation of financial reports for the UK charity’s board and donors as required.
- Oversee the audit process to ensure timely completion of audits and regulatory filings.
- Develop and maintain financial policies and procedures consistent with Kenyan laws and aligned with the UK parent organisation’s standards.
- Oversee the budgeting process, cash flow management, financial forecasts and funding streams.
- Oversee bookkeeping and accounting records management, ensuring accuracy and compliance with local regulations.
- Ensure timely regulatory filings and compliance with Kenyan tax and non-profit legislation.
- Provide financial guidance and support to Kenya team for efficient resource allocation.
- Provide financial insights and guidance to programme staff to optimise resource use.
- Build local finance capacity by mentoring any finance staff or volunteers on finance best practices.
- Assist in fundraising strategy by providing financial projections and impact analysis.
Who we’re looking for
- Proven experience in financial management or accounting, preferably within the non-profit sector.
- Strong understanding of Kenyan financial regulations and charity compliance requirements.
- Ability to work hands-on with bookkeeping and financial software.
- Excellent organisational and communication skills.
- Commitment to the charity’s mission and willingness to contribute as a volunteer.
- Strong ethical standards and integrity.
- Ability to work collaboratively with a small team and remote stakeholders.
