About BasiGo
BasiGo is an early-stage electric mobility startup transforming public transport in Africa by helping bus owners shift from diesel to electric. We are growing fast—and we’re looking for a Health, Safety and Environment Associate to help keep our teams, passengers, and communities safe as we scale.
Why This Role Might Excite You
- You believe the future of transport is electric—and want to make it safer and more sustainable.
- You enjoy designing clear, practical safety systems and policies that people actually use.
- You are passionate about training teams and building a positive safety culture.
- You see risk management as an enabler for growth, not just a compliance exercise.
What You’ll Do
Build and maintain safety systems
- Translate health, safety, and environmental policies into clear procedures, guidelines, and work instructions to support effective implementation.
- Ensure all procedures align with Kenyan and Rwandan laws and international standards from organisations like the International Labour Organization and the World Health Organization.
- Identify safety and environmental risks in daily operations and projects; design and track measures to control or remove them.
- Keep procedures and guidelines up to date through regular review and stakeholder input.
Lead training and awareness
- Design and deliver training sessions for staff, drivers, and partners to strengthen understanding of safety and environmental practices.
- Oversee ongoing driver safety training and refresher courses, making them practical and engaging.
- Act as the main contact for bus cooperatives and partners to help them meet BasiGo’s safety standards and contractual requirements.
Support compliance and continuous improvement
- Investigate any incidents or near misses, find the root causes, and make sure follow-up actions are taken.
- Carry out internal safety and environmental audits, and coordinate external audits by regulators such as the Directorate of Occupational Safety and Health, the National Environment Management Authority, and public health officials.
- Track and report key safety and environment performance metrics and prepare quarterly updates for the leadership team.
Champion environmental responsibility
- Develop and implement waste management procedures to reduce, reuse, and safely dispose of waste, including batteries and vehicle parts.
- Help create emergency response plans and run practice drills to make sure teams are ready for any incidents.
What We’re Looking For
Experience and background
- Three or more years in health, safety, and environmental roles, ideally within transport, logistics, or manufacturing industries.
- Experience creating and running training programs.
- Familiarity with safety and environmental regulations in Kenya and Rwanda.
- Recognised certifications in safety and environment management (such as NEBOSH, IOSH, or OSHA).
Skills and mindset
- Strong analytical thinking and problem-solving ability.
- Clear communicator, able to explain technical issues in simple language.
- Attention to detail and commitment to doing things right.
- Proactive, positive approach to helping teams improve.
- Genuine passion for safety, environmental responsibility, and continuous learning.
