The position
The Aga Khan Education Service, Kenya (AKES, Kenya) operates 5 schools in various cities in Kenya and provides nursery to senior secondary education in both national and international curricula. It is part of the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN), a group of private development agencies working to improve living conditions and opportunities for people of all faiths and origins in specific regions of the developing world.
AKES, Kenya is looking to hire the following position based in Nairobi: Accounts Payable Accountant (Temporary role).
Role Summary
The Accounts Payable Accountant will be responsible for overseeing the day-to-day management of payables to ensure accuracy, timeliness and compliance with internal financial policies and external regulatory requirements. The role involves invoice processing, reconciliation, vendor management and supporting the finance team in reporting and audits.
Key Responsibilities
- Ensure timely and accurate processing of all supplier invoices and payments.
- Ensure all recurrent bills are paid on a monthly basis.
- Make inter unit postings.
- Make intercompany posting, prepare debit notes and follow – up for payment.
- Prepare cost allocation (Rent, Insurance, Outsourced services etc) and payable related schedules.
- Receive floats accounting receipts and petty cash expenses from the schools and post as per budget classification.
- Review employee expense claims, ensuring they are in line with the employee expenses policy, duly approved and resolve queries with individuals before posting.
- Ensure all advance payments made to creditors have been accounted.
- Make inter unit postings.
- Make intercompany posting, prepare debit notes and follow – up for payment.
- Perform regular supplier statement reconciliations and resolve outstanding balances.
- Assist with month, quarterly and end year end closing processes.
- Assist with internal and external audits by providing required documentation.
- Ensure compliance with relevant tax regulations (e.g., VAT and Withholding Tax).
- Work closely with the Procurement and Finance teams to ensure alignment in payment cycles.
- Review and implement continuous improvement in the payables process to increase efficiency and control.
- Maintaining positive vendor relationships, and ensuring compliance with payment terms and financial regulations.
- Maintain accurate accounting records and supporting documentation for all payables.
The requirements
Qualifications And Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting or related field.
- CPA Part III or equivalent professional qualification is required.
- Minimum of 3 years’ experience in a similar Accounts Payable or accounting role.
- Strong understanding of Kenyan tax laws related to accounts payable.
- Proficient in accounting systems (e.g. Finance and operations Dynamics 365 or similar ERP).
- Excellent attention to detail, accuracy and organizational skills.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills to work collaboratively across departments.
- High integrity, accountability and ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.
