The Need

For 25 years, IJM has pioneered the work to protect vulnerable people from violence. As we grow to expand our impact to protect 500 million people globally from violence by 2030, we are seeking an energetic, motivated, highly organized, detail-oriented, and flexible individual with a passion for justice to serve the above role. The successful candidate will support the delivery of survivor-centered, trauma-informed social services for survivors of police abuse of power and violence against women and children. The role provides oversight of case management, psychosocial support, partner engagement, and trauma-informed care initiatives, while contributing to program planning, capacity building, monitoring, and reporting. Working closely with internal teams and external stakeholders, the Social Services Specialist will help strengthen support systems, enhance survivors’ access to justice, and advance IJM’s mission.

This position is based in IJM’s Nairobi office and reports to the Social Services Manager, Kenya

Key Responsibilities

  • Support the development and implementation of social services strategies, policies, and programs that advance survivor-centred outcomes and trauma-informed care.
  • Provide technical leadership and oversight of survivor case management, ensuring timely, high-quality, trauma-informed, and survivor-centered services.
  • Collaborate with government agencies, justice sector actors, and community-based partners to strengthen victim and witness support systems.
  • Support training, capacity building, and awareness initiatives to promote trauma-informed care among justice sector and community stakeholders.
  • Build and maintain strategic partnerships and networks that enhance psychosocial support services for survivors of violence.
  • Provide psychosocial support, crisis intervention, victim accompaniment, and case planning to ensure survivors receive comprehensive care throughout the justice process.
  • Support departmental planning, budgeting, monitoring, reporting, and data management to ensure effective program implementation and accountability.
  • Promote a collaborative, values-driven, and trauma-informed team culture while contributing to cross-functional initiatives and organizational goals.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Social Work, Counseling Psychology, or a related field (Master’s degree preferred).
  • At least 7 years’ experience in trauma counselling, social work, human rights, or justice sector programming.
  • 2–3 years’ experience in team leadership or supervision.
  • Demonstrated expertise in trauma-informed care and survivor-centered programming.
  • Experience in program implementation, coordination, and capacity building.
  • Experience developing training content and facilitating stakeholder engagements.
  • Experience supporting survivor leadership and community-based advocacy initiatives.

Skills & Critical Qualities

  • Strong knowledge of trauma-informed care and adherence to the Social Work Code of Ethics.
  • Passion for survivor well-being and commitment to IJM’s mission and values.
  • Excellent communication, advocacy, and social justice skills, including fluency in Kiswahili.
  • Strong critical thinking, problem-solving, partner engagement, and stakeholder management skills.
  • Collaborative team player able to work effectively in multidisciplinary and multicultural environments.
  • Results-oriented, self-motivated, and proactive, with a positive, diplomatic, and flexible approach.
  • Mature orthodox Christian faith as defined by the Apostles’ Creed.
